Well, we made it! What a great Track & Field season, with much learning, many personal bests and school records set. 

 

We coaches want to end the season by the distribution of awards, medals and closing thoughts. We have unsuccessfully been able to get a scheduled day in chapel to do so, so we decided to do a brief  after school get-together. We realize schedules are crazy this time a year and understand if you cannot make it, but we would love to have y'all in attendance, along with your parents, if they wish to attend, for recognition, end of year business, and snack.  The date is set for TUESDAY, MAY 19th, 3:15-4:00 in the high school courtyard/apron area.

 

We will be collecting your uniforms which include: shirt, shorts (And compressions if varsity) Please be sure to launder and put in quart-size zip lock bag in which it came, with size and number of uniform clearly marked on bag. If uniform is not handed in you will be responsible for the fee to replace portion or entire uniform. 

 

Also, if you attended Varsity Regional Meet and haven’t paid hotel room portion of $25.00, please bring a check at this time made out to STE Athletics.

End of the year AWARDS & business

Spring Break Track Workouts

Hope you all are enjoying your well-deserved break! With all the hard work & dedication you have put into your Track & field program, I don't want you to regress by not having an optional workout to keep your goals intact. Below are optional, but encouraged workouts.  JH has Championship the week we return and varsity 4 weeks to peek for Districts!  Enjoy your break, but get some running & fielding in :)                                                               Choose whichever 3 days in which to complete workouts: I know many cannot get onto a track, just estimate distances such as 400m, 200m, etc. JH may eliminate a set if needed.

100/200 Sprinters

1. Jog/Sprints total 20 minutes. Wall sit 5 minutes, plank, side plank, airplane, superman (Hold 60 sec, repeat)

2. intervals: 3 x Run 400 meters between each exercise:12 burpees, 20 jump lunges, 20 push ups, 

3. suicides: 3 x R 30 sec between each set. Set 5 objects about 30 meters from each other, run to 1st, touch, run back, run to next, next, next

300 hurdlers/ 400/800 

1. Jog/Sprints total 25 minutes. Wall sit 5 minutes, plank, side plank, airplane, superman (Hold 60 sec, repeat)

3. HILL running if you have a nearby hill! 5 x Run up & down 5 times.r20sec.between each set of 5

Reminders & Updates JH Track

Reminder: Wednesday's March 11,(Tomorrow) practice will be at Presbyterian Track 5:15-7:15. Bus leave STE 5:00. Thursday JH will practice at school 3:30-5:15.

Spring Break Meet, Tuesday March 17th has been canceled due to not enough participants with many out of town. :(

 I will post spring break workouts to keep your athlete in condition by this weekend. They of course are optional,

GHAC dates are March 24.25. More information will be coming, however I wanted to give you dates a head of time.

Track Practice Cancelled due to unsafe, drenched tracks.

Track Practice Canceled due to unsafe, drenched tracks, and many sick kiddos.We want to try to keep your athletes healthy & safe!  Sorry on late notice, we have to wait until someone physically goes to the field to check out conditions :(  If possible can pick up your athlete after school; if need, the study hall until 5:00 will be available. Have athletes take a "Recovery run" to work out stiffness of lactic workout yesterday.

Reminder: Thursday & Friday JH Track meet at Presbyterian Sports Complex off 288/Reed Rd.

Athletes will be dismissed at 2:25, bus departs 3:00. Dress weather appropriate, always make Coach happy by wearing sweat pants & jacket until fully drilled & warmed up :). The Panthers track meet scheduled for Wednesday & Thursday of this week has been modified by host school. Meet will be held Thursday & Friday this week. Wednesday's schedule will now be moved to Friday. Same place, same time. JH will not have practice tomm, Wednesday.

This weeks meet day change

JH MEET CHANGE this week. PLEASE NOTE
 
 
We have decided to move the Panther Relays back one day due to the weather prediction of bad weather (particularly rain) tomorrow.  The forecast for Thursday and Friday, while chilly has little chance of precipitation.  The weather in February is very capricious, so we apologize for the inconvenience this will cause.
 
So here is what we have decided:
  • Based upon my Monday email, it appears that all schools will still be participating.  We might have to reshuffle event entries.
  • The deadline to enter athletes on athletic.net will be moved back to midnight tonight. 
  • The events on Wednesday (girls run/boys field) will be moved to Friday.  This will create the least amount of change.Hopefully the Wed. volunteers can move to Friday. .
  • Thursday events (boys run/girls field) will remain the same.  Volunteers will remain intact.
  • I need to hear from coaches who are helping run field events.  Let me know if this changes.
  • The starting time (4:00) will remain the same for both days.

Due to freezing rain, high winds, and cold temps tonight, track practice has been canceled. With 3 meets this week, I don't want any of our sweet kiddos getting sick! For field events, each athlete will be allowed three attempts.  This excludes High Jump, which is

    three jumps per height.  There will be no finals.

All 80 M Hurdles will be set at 30” for 6th boys and 6th girls as well as 7th girls.  7th boys and 8th 

    girls will run 100 M Hurdles set at 30”.  8th boys will run 100 M Hurdles set at 33”.

Trophy presentation follows the last event.  Medals will be in the team packets.  Results will be 

    sent to you electronically.

Feb 23-28 Weekly schedule & news

How exciting seeing how far your athletes are coming along! The joy as I see them accomplish their goals, believe in themselves and encourage others just melts my coaching heart! Please encourage them to stretch everyday, as sometimes we run short on doing so at practice. Below is the tentative weekly schedule, providing the cold & rain does not damper our plans. As always, I will make the decision as to whether or not to cancel practices by 1:00 that day via alerts, so please check your email, texts, alert site. Also, if you would encourage your athletes to keep a warm jacket, sweat pants, hat & gloves in their track bags, as it gets windy at the track and I hesitate cancelling practice just on a count of the cold.                                                                                                                                                               Monday: Presbyterian 5:15-7:15 bus depart STE 5:00 Endurance, field events.Need to know whether or not your athlete will be attending Wed/Thur meet.

Tuesday: Speed work, relays. (Must be here if you wish to be on relay team this week).

Weds/Thurs: MEET. Presbyterian School. us depart STE 3:00/Meet begin 4:00.This meet is split into 2 days, so will not run as late as normal.

Weekly Schedule: (Due to Presbyterian off school Mon & Tues, we can access the track at the earlier tie this week, PROVIDING Mr. Kays can secure us a bus at that early time. Monday has been approved for earlier time, however, we are waiting on early confirmation of Tues early practice; I was told we should know tomm.) Also playing a factor in track this week is rain : ( Looks like Monday will be the only practice in question, in which I will make call no later than noon on Monday. Please check to make arrangements to pick athetes at correct time.

IMPORTANT DETAILS TO NOTE: If you haven't picked up your uniform, please see Coach Petties asap to do MANY athletes have been coming to practice much under-dressed for the weather conditions. PLEASE make sure our babies have sweat pants & jacket, as it does get breezy at this track;  also is a safety precaution to keep muscles warm to prevent injury. Thank you for your cooperation. Needing charged, potable Dvd's for tomorrow's Field Event/Instructional Track practice tomorrow. If you have one we can borrow for tomorrow, please have athlete bring (Charged), with them.

TRACK PRACTICE CANCELLED TODAY due to RAIN 2-3

ATTENTION TRACK Athletes & Parents:

 
I have been watching the hourly rain forecast, which is increasing throughout the day, being 80 around the time of practice. Because the cold rain would both be dangerous and possibly make for sick children, I’m canceling practice. I have inquired about an indoor practice, however, no space is available at the school. I had alerted athletes that today’s practice might possibly be canceled and to watch for alert and announcement.  
So PLEASE pick up or have child take regular transportation home after school. 
 
Tomorrow we are watching field event instructional after school from 3:30-5:00. If time permits after videos, we will do some plyo work, so bring shorts & run shoes. 
IF anyone has a portable dvd player, would you charge & bring it please. Also, we will have uniforms  to give out tomorrow.

2-2 Track Practice

Track Study hall will be held in room 102. Bus leaves promptly at 5:00. Weather chilly today,means wear sweat pants & jacket over shorts. Lights gloves & hat if wish. Also DO eat a good snack before practice since later time. See you on the TRACK...EXCITING! I am watching the rain chance  for tomorrow and hopefully will be able to call it tonight. Upcoming track schedule and news

Dear Parents & Track Athletes:

 

The season is off to a great start! With currently 27 varsity and 26 JH athletes, we are continuing to grow in numbers each week, and our team talent and spirit is incredible. The first two weeks were spent conditioning, preparing our bodies for upcoming training and competing, team bonding and goal setting mixed in with a whole lot of fun!  We have learned  a lot about proper stretching techniques, drills to strengthen our joints and muscles, injury prevention, signs and treatments. We also have established quite a team bond and strong leadership qualities. (Oh, the athlete's faces when I told them, “I’m really starting to like y’all a bit”) Honestly, I, along with my amazing fellow coaches have really enjoyed these sweet kiddos and are looking forward to the continuation of  training , getting to know them individually and watching them flourish! I’ve encouraged your athlete to adapt the stretches and drills learned to their daily routine to prevent injuries and strengthen joints and muscles. They have hand-outs which I suggested they file in a binder for reference. 

 

 I want to touch on a couple of things as we begin our active training. Beginning next Monday, Feb. 2, we will be following the schedule bellow. A monitored study hall will be held from 3:15-5:00 (Room not yet assigned,but will be announced Monday). ALL JH track athletes are required to attend, if they plan on taking the bus to and from track practice. Varsity athletes are welcome to take the bus also,(Bus leaving promptly 5:00), but aren’t required to attend study hall; however we coaches will be firm insisting self-discipline in using their time wisely to complete homework and study, as to keep grades up.  The bus will be leaving Presbyterian School to head back to STE at 7:15, pulling into STE lot approximately 7:30. Please pick your athlete up on time. 

 

M,T,R: bus to Presbyterian School 9100 South Freeway, Houston 77051 practice 5:30-7:15

W:       Willowbend Soccer field 3:45-5:15.Bus leave STE 3:30, parent pick up at field.

Some Wednesdays and/or rain days we may opt to work out at school. We will give notice by night before at latest.

 

Secondly, I have talked to all athlete’s who have medical notations on their record. I want to be well aware of all my athlete’s conditions and take proper precautions in advance if attention is needed. I have talked to many of you parents, but hope to call remainder of you whom I have not, to briefly chat to be sure of your child’s safety during season. Rest assured, these are our “Babies” during season, and we will treat them just as our own. 

I will carry a zippered pouch to every practice and meet, in which we will hold all inhalers, epipen injectors, diabetic snack of choice,(Labeled with name) and  individual medications. I am asking that all be clearly labeled with athlete’s name. The medical forms will be carried at all times.  We coaches are educated on how to handle these situations and administer steps to be taken if emergency exists. I am also Red Cross CPR certified. We certainly pray we all have a safe, non-eventful season, however, I do take your athlete’s well being a serious matter and want you parents to be at ease.

 

 I’m thrilled to see that all athletes have great running shoes, because that makes a huge difference, not only in performance but also safety. As we determine the running events your athlete will be specializing in, they will need to purchase that particular track spike. These can be bought at any running store or sport store. 

 

Lastly, if you have not yet signed up to receive emails, texts and/or twitter alerts regarding track, please do immediately, as this will be our main means of communicating news, updates, change or plans/locations, rain out details etc.  go to www.steathletics.org. Go to right bottom of the page “Fan Account”, “Create an account”.

There you can choose the method of communications you desire. (I suggest both texts and emails since some messages will not fit in text format). As always, you can log onto site and click on the “Track &Field” link to check news, view pictures, schedules and much more. I do not have access to school emails; this is the only means of communication, so please take time to sign up as early as possible. 

 

Please plan to support and cheer on your athlete at track meets. It’s always fun to have a cheering squad of supporters.

No Practice Tomorrow/Thursday 1-22

 

NO Track practice tomorrow due to the "Toad Strangling" weather we are expecting & no open, dry place to utilize inside. Stretch, Hydrate & be so proud of yourselves! Great 1st week! Use those proper stretching techniques which we learned, and those of you whom I spoke to about knee or ankle strengthening  excercise be sure to incorporate for injury prevention.  Lastly, remember optional homework for a "Surprise Monday" Enjoy yr wknd and we'' see you Monday!

Welcome to 2015 TRACK season

Welcome Track athletes and families to what promises to be a productive, positive, fun track season. I am looking forward to getting to know and work with all the fine athletes at STE. 

 
Track practice begins This Monday, Jan. 19, 3:45-5:15 at STE  Willowbend field. Bus will leave  school PROMPTLY at 3:30.(Driver needs to be at her next destination to pick other students up directly after dropping us off at field.) I encourage athletes to change quickly and head straight to the bus, so we can assure a 3:30 departure. 
 
The first two weeks will be our conditioning, learning basics, analyzing and placement practices and will be held M-R, 3:45-5:15 at STE Willowbbend Field. 
 
Starting on February 2, practices will be as such: 
 
M,T,R  5:30-7:00, Presbyterian School Athletic Track, 9100 South Fwy, Houston, 77051. Monitored study hall 3:15-5:00, bus to track 5:00, parents pick athletes up at 7:00. (Reminder: JH athletes have mainly Tuesday meets, so only traveling to Presb. practice 2 days/week.)
 
 Wednesdays 3:45-5:15, Willowbend 4113 Drive, Houston 77025. Bus departs STE 3:30, parents pick athletes up at field 5:15.
 
NO  practice on Fridays. 
 
I never mind parents hanging around, at a distance,during practices. I just ask that you don’t “Over-coach” or distract any of the athletes. Who knows, I might invite you to join in a fun game or activity with us! :). 
Please have your athletes dressing  in accordance to STE dress code. I will insist on sweat or running pants  & light jacket until athletes are fully warmed up, since this is an important safety habit for athletes in protecting their muscles. On very cold days, stretch gloves and a hat help tremendously. 
 
Athletes bring to every practice: plenty of water (Labeled if bottled), stretch bands mentioned in supply list, running shoes, track spikes (Once race assigned), light, healthy snack to eat after school, before practice, notebook & pen, towel for stretching & ground work optional. 
 
Attached is a tentative schedule of practices, meets and events. Much information is still pending, therefore not yet filled in, however I will be both giving athletes and posting  updates and confirmed details on a weekly basis.  Coach Harrell is fading out edline emailing system to the improved, all in one BIG TEAMS ATHLETIC  means of communication. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go to www.steathletic.org and sign up for a “Fan account” as soon as possible! there you can choose to receive emails, texts, or twitter updates as they post. Also you have the option to simply log on and click on “Track & field” on bottom to see news, pictures, videos, schedules and more.

Need track practice reply for bus transportation

Dear Parents, We are trying to secure bus arrangements for travels to track practice during the season. We need a head count of how many athletes will be utilizing bus transportation to practices held at Presbyterian School during the season, so we can reserve a bus to accommodate numbers. Would you do me a favor and  text me at 757.676.6872, at your earliest convenience,  with your student's name/s  and grade if they plan to travel on the bus.

Upcoming track & field start up

Dear track parents & athletes:

 

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season full of blessings, cherished family time and rejuvenation! 

 

I wanted to touch base with you regarding the upcoming track & field season.

I have been diligently working on concerns which were expressed at the parent/athlete meeting in December. I am waiting word back this week on a possible earlier time for usage of the track, (5:00-6:30 rather than 5:30-7:00). Also we are securing a monitored study hall for T&F athletes to be held at STE, directly after school, until travel time to the field. I appreciate your understanding,cooperation and sweet, encouraging emails I have received. We will not be incorporating the track until the week of Feb 2.

 

Practice will begin Monday, January 19th at our STE practice field, (4113 Willowbend Drive). The 1st two weeks of practice will be solely at Willowbend field from 3:30-5:30. Bus will leave for field immediately following school and  parents will need to pick athletes up at 5:30.

The first two weeks of practice will be important, busy weeks of conditioning, instruction, analyzing and team building. Beginning February 2nd, we will be incorporating our Presbyterian School track usage. After securing times this week, I will pass on concrete details. 

 

By now, athletes should have gotten fitted for running shoes. If not, please do so at your earliest convenience. Also, we will be using stretching bands right from the start, so please include them in athlete’s bag the first day of practice. (I’ve attached information and supply list again for reference.)

Hopefully your athlete has already been working on his/her pre-workouts, but if not, please encourage them to do so to prevent injuries during season. If you need another copy just let me know so I can email you asap.

Tuesdays Track Pre-Workout Demo/workout

Just a reminder: tomorrow, Tuesday Dec 16, 3:30-4:30 we will be offering pre-season  track workout demo to assure that our sweet athletes are doing them safely. We will meet in back of school, by playground & weight room. Bring water & wear comfortable clothes to try workouts. We realize this is finals week, so this is totally optional.
